STD Testing Q & A

What are STDs/STIs?

Sexually transmitted diseases/infections, or STDs/STIs, are spread through sexual contact. They’re caused by bacteria, a virus, or another type of microscopic organism. STIs are very commong, and lots of people who have them don't have any symptoms. But the good news is that getting tested is no big deal, and most STDs are easily treatable.

STD/STI testing is available at Canopy for some of the most common infections, including:

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • HPV (human papillomavirus), including genital warts
  • Pubic lice/crabs
  • Syphilis
  • HIV (human immunodeficiency virus)
  • Herpes
  • Hepatitis C
  • Trichomoniasis

Some STDs/STIs clear up with antibiotic treatment while others may not be cured, but their symptoms managed.

What is STI testing?

STI testing uses a sample of your blood, urine, saliva or a swab from your genitals, to check for infection. Some results are available within 20 minutes while other results can take 2-3 days for results.

The team at Canopy Medical Clinic tries to accommodate same-day STD testing appointments and usually accepts walk-ins if time is available.

Following the confidential testing, the team provides counseling, so you know how to manage your diagnosis.

Who needs STI testing?

Anyone sexually active can develop an STI and should get routine testing. If you have multiple partners, testing is recommended more frequently.

You should also come in for STI testing if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Sores, blisters, or warts in the genital area
  • Pelvic pain that’s not related to your period
  • Unusual vaginal or penile discharge
  • Pain when urinating or blood in the urine
  • Abnormal vaginal spotting or bleeding
  • Flu-like symptoms, feeling tired, fever, chills, swollen glands

Even if these symptoms go away on their own, you should still get a test. Infections linger until you get treated and can cause complications, including pain, internal scarring, and infertility.

Is STI testing expensive?

Canopy Medical Clinic works with numerous state and federal programs to provide STI testing for low cost. Most insurance companies cover routine screening. Our out of pocket costs for routine screening (no current symptoms) is provided at the following rates:

HIV Screen Free
Hepatitis C Screen Free
Syphilis Screen $40.00
Chlamydia/Gonorrhea $20.00 per anatomical site (vaginal, rectal, oral, urine)

If you are having STI symptoms or have a known STI exposure, you will be charged a standard office visit fee, plus the cost of any needed testing.
